“ART IS A SIGN OF LIFE. THERE CAN BE NO LIFE WITHOUT CHANGE, AS
THERE CAN BE
NO DEVELOPMENT WITHOUT CHANGE.

TO BE AFRAID OF WHAT IS DIFFERENT
IS TO BE AFRAID
OF LIFE...”

I am not sure if it is a sign of getting older or just how complicated our lives have become, but during the last few years my photography has become about my love affair with collecting tokens of Americana which have been slowly disappearing from our landscape.

These symbols have not only become emblematic of the world from which they come but also the life and times of the people they represent. I strive to infuse in the images the dignity and perseverance embodied by these icons of our heritage.

My images start with a pre-visualization process in which I locate my subjects and form in my mind the final image. By working early in the morning and just before sunset I am able to capture subtle shifting light and it’s transforming effect on textures, shadows, and colors. Then by supplementing this naturally beautiful lighting with artificial light and a post visualization process I am able to convey to the viewer the world that I envision  enhancing the feeling and emotion of the subject and creating an image both natural and sublime.

A key to understanding my work is found in a quote by the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky. “The observer must learn to look at the picture as a graphic representation of a mood and not as a representation of objects”.
